Training locations

Abingdon & Vale Triathlon Club (AVTC) currently trains at multiple locations in the area. This allows the club to reach a wider area of people and to utilise the best training facilities possible to us. The club also makes use of the local athletics track and in the warmer months trains at a nearby open water swimming lake.

This is Abingdon’s largest public sports and leisure facility. The club uses this venue all year round for their swimming sessions. The club typically run two sessions 7-8pm and 8-9pm. Please come along to your usual session for a structured swim session that will improve your fitness and technique. Bring water, and if you have them also bring along your fins, hand paddles etc.

This is the area's largest private health club, based in Milton Park, on the outskirts of Didcot. The club generally meets here for their spinning sessions. This is a really fun session that is suitable for members of all ability. Set to some great music and as tough as you want to make them and really true to what cycling is about. Ensure you bring a drink and a towel as we promise you will sweat. You can wear trainers and comfortable gym wear but if you have them we would recommend cycle shorts. If you have Shimano SPD cleats the pedals also have the option of using these (the mountain bike type, NOT the road cleats).

Tilsley Park is Oxfordshire's premier football and athletics centre. The club meets here to use their athletics track for some of their running sessions. Come along for a fun and tough session which is a surefire way of improving your run technique and speed. This session will be suitable for beginners and experienced track runners alike. If there is enough members in attendance we will run a separate group for novices focusing on drills and technique as well as some interval running. Bring a drink!

Oxford Wakeboard & Ski Club (OWSC) with its two sheltered lakes, top class tournament boats and facilities and friendly atmosphere, offers a centre of excellence for all disciplines of water skiing and Wake boarding. The club uses this lake for their open water swimming sessions as well as being the venue for the Oxfordshire Triathlon Series. There is also a cafe on site which does meals and hot drinks.

Directions: On leaving Abingdon on the Marcham road going under the A34, take the first right which takes you onto the Faringdon Road; first right again takes you on to Barrow Rd. First left takes you to the airfield with big gates across the entrance.

Once on the Airfield, we either meet near the gate, or if there's no-one there, just out of sight following the perimeter road around to the left, ~1.2km from the gate, where there is some space to park on the left, just off the road.

Intervals are a very effective way of improving your run speed, this is a fun session using areas of
the park for a run session that is suitable for all abilities. Bring along a drink and dress appropriately for the weather.

There is parking available at the college. This is a fun and challenging indoor session, open to all levels of ability and fitness. Circuits is as hard as you push yourself but with motivation from others and the coach. It will consist of strength, cardio and functional exercises that will complement our 3 sports. Be prepared for some tough fun!

Notes: Off road hills: providing a chance to strength muscles and work on core stability while running.


There is parking for the clumps near the top or down near St Peter’s church in Little Wittenham.

These sets are a chance to run on varied terrain, the rest of the public have as much right as we do to be there and so we should be courteous. There also can be animals grazing in this area, the set will endeavour to use space away from the animals, but we will stop and relocate if the animals choose to move into the training area. There are no toilet facilities, please bring a drink, and with both areas please don’t drop any litter.

This is not a coached session from AVTC, but is popular amongst our members. The last Saturday of the month the club tries to get a group of runners together to take part at either Abingdon or Didcot Parkrun and then we go for cake after.
