Welcome to this weeks newsletter!

 

Christmas Party and Awards Night tickets are now available for £15 each, you can get them at training sessions or from Hannah and Kate. Payments can be made by bank transfer to the club or cash. Tickets will be given once payment has been received. Quite a few of you were keen to enter the bake off so get your recipe books and aprons out ready as these will be our desserts for the evening.

 

We still have spaces left to join us in raising money for our club charity MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT at the archery taster session. Its on Saturday 18th November with a choice of two sessions either 3pm or 4pm. Its only £10. There is also a coffee shop so you can grab a drink and chat. Message Hannah or Wendy.

 

The Committee meet regularly to discuss ways in which we can provide an even better membership for club members; if you have any suggestions, comments, concerns or words of praise then please let us know at the email address below!

Feedback from the Coaching Team 
 
A response from the coaches to points raised at the AGM:


The coaches voluntarily give their time to run sessions. We try to provide safe and fun sessions for the athletes to train and improve. We get rewarded through watching athletes achieve their goals, making progress and enjoying triathlon as a sport.

 

Point a) Milton Industrial park run session are boring

Milton park session are as popular as track sessions (from the attendance numbers). The location is easy for most to get to and the lit footpath make it good for the winter months. The main thing is its real-world format, training on surfaces most members have access to outside club session. It has a bridge for hill reps and gives run session some variation. Although not everyone’s ideal session, we are keen to keep something like this in the calendar. If someone has an alternate location they would like to suggest please mention it to a coach.

 

Point b) Prefer it when coaches giving more specific coaching points to individuals / Liked it when had the same coach for a few weeks.

As a club we provide group coached sessions, in this format we cater for a range of abilities. We try to provide feedback as much as we can. However, depending on the set and the range of abilities attending, the level of individual feedback will vary. What helps the coaches, who may not have coached a particular swim lane or session in a while, is if the athletes talk to the coaches at the start and tell them what elements they are work on, or points they would like the coach to look out for. From a practical point we deliberately mix up the coaching week to week, to allow the coaches time to do their own training, and adapt to coaches’ availability.


Also, some sets are meant to work on fitness, to be hard and push athletes. In these sets the coaches fight the urge to make points. We are trying to keep you moving with specific rest intervals and this allows athletes to experience some different ways to train.

 

Point c) More spin less run

The club sessions have been weight in the winter towards run sets over spin. This will continue to Christmas but in the spring we are hoping to put some extra spin sets. Spin set can take more time from the coach to prepare, as music playlist need to be put together. We are going to try following a video during the next spin session as a possible way of making these sessions less onerous on the coach, to enable us to do more sets. 

 

Point d) Do a weight session in a gym

As British triathlon coaches we are not qualified to run these sorts of sets. Also a certain level of technical ability is required for weights session which is not appropriate for all members. We are therefore not looking to run this type of session as a club set.

 

Point e) (raised outside AGM) Athletes are told to do drills, but don’t always know the point, how it will help them improve in the associate discipline?

We are now trying to put the focus of most sessions in the news letter so you know what the set are about before turning up. As coaches we will try and help communicate why we are doing the drills. We do try to be friendly and approachable so if you’re not sure why you are being asked to do something, just asked. Don’t be put off by the puzzled look you may get on the coached face, it is like the windows loading icon, just wait a moment whilst your question is processed, they will then be able to give you a useful insight.

 

The sessions are only run for the members. If there is something you would like help with or something you think would be good to be included in a session, suggest it to one of the coaches. We want all the athletes to set individual goals, work towards and achieve them, so please let us know what your aiming for and what you’re working on.

Monday - 19.00 - Run Social - Tilsley Park

Please meet at reception. 

 

**new shorter routes are available for those people who want to run for less than 5km, so if you're wanting to get back into running after a break, come along!**

 

Whilst this is not a coached session, it will help develop your running endurance - we take a 10km (ish) route around Abingdon (shorter routes are available, 5km and 7km) and run in ability groups.  No-one will be left behind and there is ALWAYS someone to run with. A great way to keep your running up AND have a mini social at the same time. Win Win! 

 

Tuesday 31st- 19:00 - 20:00 - Strength & Conditioning (S&C) - Steventon Village Hall, OX13 6RR

Coaches: Wendy and Ben

 

Please bring a yoga mat with you if you have one (or a thick towel). Triathletes tend to focus on training in the sports rather than training for the sport. Adding S&C sessions to your weekly training will benefit you hugely in all three disciplines. S&C training will give balance to muscle differences, strengthen tendons and ligaments, tackle flexibility and reduce injuries. The session will be suitable for all from beginner to advanced, with exercises having progressive elements depending on individual proficiency.

 

Thursday - 19:00-20:00 / 20:00-21:00hrs - Pool Swim - Abingdon White Horse Leisure Centre, OX14 3PJ

Coaches: Ben (19.00) and Mike and Sorrel (20.00)

 

£3 payable to coaching staff on poolside, do not pay at reception. Please come along to either the session at 7pm or 8pm, whichever suits you better for a structured swim session that will improve your fitness and technique.If you have them bring along your fins, hand paddles etc.and a drink.
