Summer Venues

Message from Head Coach Ben

Last week we moved into the summer AVTC training schedule. This week the move is a little move obvious with two venues returning in the training roster: Dalton Barracks and Wittenham clumps. Both are non lit venues, open to the elements, and with no on-site facilities. What follows are some notes on both to provide helpful information.

> Dalton Barracks

We have a licence to use the perimeter road around the airfield on several Tuesday evenings during the summer. It is a great venue with closed roads to the public and this gives the less experience riders a safe place practise and the more experienced a chance to push themselves without worrying about traffic.

Getting there – OX13 6JA

On leaving Abingdon on the Marcham road going under the A34, take the first right which takes you onto the Faringdon Rd; first right again takes you on to Barrow Rd. First left takes you to the airfield with big gates across the entrance. Once on the Airfield, depending on the session, we either meet near the gate (for a pure bike set), or just out of sight following the perimeter road around to the left, ~1.2km from the gate, where there is some space to park on the left, just off the road. In a change from previous years, we will be shutting the gate, at the Barrow Road entrance during the sessions, it won’t be locked. This is a request from the barracks, it just means if you turn up late or need to leave early please open and close the gate behind you.

Facilities, Drinks and Weather

Dalton Barracks is great bit of closed roads to train on; there are dog walkers and on rare occasions a military vehicle to look out for. However, there are no toilets or places to fill up drinks bottles, so please come prepared. Even on a cloudy, windy day you will still need plenty to drink to keep you hydrated. The venue is an airfield and open to the elements, please bring layers. Bring extra clothing and you can leave it at the meeting point till the end of the session if you don’t need them.

> Wittenham Clumps – OX10 8NB

Off road hills: providing a chance to strength muscles and work on core stability while running. There is parking for the clumps near the top or down near St Peter’s church in Little Wittenham.

These sets are a chance to run on varied terrain, the rest of the public have as much right as we do to be there and so we should be courteous. There also can be animals grazing in this area, the set will endeavour to use space away from the animals, but we will stop and relocate if the animals choose to move into the training area. Again there are no toilet facilities, please bring a drink, and with both areas please don’t drop any litter.

Club Kit

Club champs

This year's Club Champs is one race - the Newbury Triathlon - which is on Sunday 2nd September. We have organised our own wave but we need at least 20 people to enter from the club to secure this by the end of May. It is a race that always fills but they are holding these spots currently for us.

The 2018 Newbury Triathlon is based at Northcroft Leisure Centre in the heart of Newbury. Centred around the 75-yard outdoor heated swimming pool, there is plenty of space for spectators to watch both the swim and transition antics. The race distances are 300yd Swim/22km Bike/5km Run and you will receive a free quality running t-shirt for taking part. Find out more and enter via the Race Nation.

This week's training

Monday - 7pm - Run Social - Tilsley Park

Please meet at reception.

Whilst this is not a coached session, it will help develop your running endurance - we take a 10km (ish) route around Abingdon (shorter routes are available, 5km and 7km) and run in ability groups. No-one will be left behind and there is ALWAYS someone to run with. A great way to keep your running up AND have a mini social at the same time. Win Win!

Tuesday - 7pm - Brick Training - Dalton Barracks, Shippon, Abingdon, OX13 6JA

These are great run/bike/run sessions to prepare for a triathlon, working on fitness, transitions and practising switching between disciplines without a break. The sessions are timed so you can gauge improvement through the summer. It starts with a run around the top part of the airfield, either a 3km or 5km loop, before you enter transition. You then switch kit and exit transition to bike around the southern 2/3 of the loop, 3.3km loops, typically completing 3 or 6 loops (10km or 20km), then re-entering transition, to change back for a run straight off the bike. For the session you need your run kit, and all your bike kit. Ideally a tri suit or shorts, or a combo of clothing you can switch without needing a changing room.

Thursday - Pool Swim -6:50-8:00pm and 7:50-9:00pm - White Horse Leisure Centre, Abingdon

Coaches: Matt and Andy

£3 payable to coaching staff on poolside, do not pay at reception. Please come along to either the session at 6.50pm or 7.50pm, whichever suits you better for a structured swim session that will improve your fitness and technique. If you have them bring along your fins, hand paddles etc. and a drink. Also t-shirt and shorts for dry warm up by the side of the pool.

Saturday - off-road running - 9am - Wittenham Clumps Coach: Ben
